Shovel elements have been shown to increase the intake capacity for powders by a factor of
two or more at moderate screw speeds of 300 RPM. Normal elements have shown decreased
capacity (or no further increase in capacity) with increasing extrusion speed due to
fluidization of the material. On the contrary, shovel elements show a nearly linear conveying
capacity of the shovel elements with increase in speeds. Therefore at 1500 RPM, the
difference in intake capacity of shovel elements with respect to normal elements could be as
much as 10 times.
With the shovel elements, the intake capacity is enhanced at higher extrusion speed. This is
an important requirement that is necessary to utilize the process capability of the co-rotating
twin-screw extruder.
